Chicago Spire along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago
is an artful new tower designed by Spanish architect and
artist Santiago Calatrava. It will dedicate five floors to amenities
holding everything from billiards and cigar rooms
to a private movie theater and spa, while active pursuits
can be had at the basketball court, rock climbing wall,
golf simulator, and various exercise rooms geared to yoga,
pilates, and group fitness. Chicago Spire’s integrated fitness
and lifestyle program will offer residents a custom
approach to fitness, diet, and nutrition.
The art of activity is also incorporated into Calatrava’s
2,000-foot-tall design, which, when completed in 2011,
will become the world’s tallest strictly residential tower.
The seven-sided, concrete and glass building rotates about
2.44 degrees between floor plates, creating the illusion
that Chicago Spire is spinning. The lobby will also move,
showcasing a maple slat ceiling designed to ripple like a
wave some 53 feet above the airy entryway.
Calatrava also had a hand in designing each of the 1,194
residences, which will include a mix of suites, one- to
four-bedroom apartments, and galleries. A signature unit
will feature a spherical bedroom enclosed within circular
sliding glass doors. Ten-foot windows will provide views
of the lakefront and city, while interiors will feature neutral
palettes accented with wide-plank herringbone hardwood
floors. In-home panels will allow residents to access
the concierge to request car service, dinner reservations,
or airline tickets.
