South Africa
phinda african homesteads
In South Africa, ecotourism collaborator
Conservation Corporation (CC) Africa
and Tara Getty, founder of the Africa Foundation,
are developing a collection of private
residences on the Phinda Game Reserve.
Located below the Lebombo Mountains of
Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Phinda (Zulu
word meaning “the return”) encompasses
one of the biggest reintroductions of game
in Africa, including elephant, lion, buffalo,
rhino, giraffe, and leopard.
The 15 African Homesteads will be an alternative
to owning a private game farm, with
views of the mountains, watering hole, or sand
forest. Each of the estates, which will be
managed by CC Africa, will include a dedicated
ranger, tracker, chef, butler, security
guard, housekeeping staff, and open fourby-four
safari vehicle.
The homes, designed by architect Nick
Plewman and interior designer Chris Browne,
will resemble the architecture and design of
the existing Phinda Getty House with four
en-suite bedrooms and a fifth bedroom for
staff. Furnishings and finishes will reflect the
local surroundings, a 42,500-acre swath of
land in South Africa’s Zulu Kingdom that
encompasses seven ecosystems.
