In 200 B.C., Philon of
Byzantium declared seven man-made monuments
the Seven Wonders of the World. The writer’s
selections, which included the Great Pyramid of Giza
and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, essentially
served as a travel guide for fellow Athenians who
wanted to explore the Mediterranean.
While Philon didn’t have the means to travel
the world and discover other wonders, today’s jetsetters
seek memorable spots beyond their own
backyards. From burgeoning cities in the desert
to private islands in the South Pacific to spiraling
architectural icons, here is a look at seven modern,
awe-inspiring wonders.
